How to Build Team Spirit and Camaraderie for Your Ragnar Relay

Ragnar is about more than just running. The stories, inside jokes, and spontaneous dance parties at 3 am are how a group of runners become lifelong friends. Whether you’re running through winding trails or passing off the baton on an open road, the best teams are the ones that show up for each other; not just at the finish line, but every step of the way.

So how do you build that bond before, during, and after the race? It starts long before the first runner takes off.

Before the Race: Lay the Foundation

A Ragnar team is a mix of personalities, running styles, and experience levels. Some runners have done this a dozen times. Others signed up because… maybe they lost a bet? The sooner you bring everyone together, the better.

Meet up for a few group runs, even if it’s just a casual jog and a coffee after. If you’re spread out in different cities (or even states!), hop on a video call to talk logistics and expectations.

Assign fun roles! someone in charge of snacks, someone on playlist duty, someone who can be relied on for motivational speeches (or ridiculous pep talks). The more everyone feels involved, the more invested they’ll be in the team.

During the Race: Celebrate Every Moment

Ragnar is unpredictable. Legs that look easy on paper somehow feel like they’re uphill both ways. Sleep is a luxury. Van smells evolve. This is where team spirit matters most.

Check in with each other. If someone’s struggling after a tough leg, be the first to hand them a snack or crack a joke to lift their spirits. Hype up every runner coming into an exchange, even if all you can manage is a sleepy high-five at 4 a.m. Keep the energy up in whatever way works for your team. This could mean blasting music, decorating the van, or inventing absurd challenges like “fastest person to chug a chocolate milk at the exchange.” Actually, maybe don’t chug milk in the heat…

Every team has its own rhythm. Some will be all about competition and pace charts. Others will just be out there for the adventure. What matters is that you find what makes your crew click and lean into it.

After the Race: Keep the Connection Going

The finish line isn’t the end. If anything, it’s the start of the next Ragnar! Whether you decide to run it back next year, or just relive the stories forever, make plans for a post-race meet-up! Share photos, swap war stories, and remind each other of the moments that made it all worth it.

At the end of the day, the best part of Ragnar isn’t just the miles. It’s the people who ran them with you.
