Your Ultimate Guide to Ragnar Road: What to Expect & What to Pack

Your Ultimate Guide to Ragnar Road: What to Expect & What to Pack

So, you’ve signed up for a Ragnar Road relay. Buckle up (literally!), because you’re about to embark on a 200-ish mile running road trip like no other. Over the next two days and one night, you and your team will take turns running relay-style through some of the most scenic roads in the country. You’ll bond over sweaty miles, inside jokes, and that unique van-life smell that can only be described as "Eau de Runner."

But before you hit the pavement, let’s talk about what to expect and what to pack so you’re 100% ready for race weekend.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON RACE WEEKEND

The Van Life Experience

Your van isn’t just a vehicle. It’s your home, your locker room, your dining hall, and, if you’re lucky, your nap pod. Each team is split into two vans, leapfrogging along the course while runners take their turns pounding the pavement.

Inside your van, you’ll have:

  • Your teammates (aka your new best friends).
  • Your gear (organized... hopefully).
  • Your snacks (hide the good ones).
  • A growing collection of race-day energy and questionable smells.
  • The Exchange Points

Between each runner’s leg, you’ll stop at designated exchange points. Some are larger than others (where Van 1 and 2 switch). Smaller exchanges are hosted by local community members–be sure to thank them for their support. Exchange 6 and finish have more amenities that can include:

  • Food trucks with delicious post-run fuel.
  • Partner activations (think free samples, recovery zones, and fun giveaways).
    • In 2025 you can look forward to:
      • Yellowstone Bourbon: On-site offering swag, prizes, and of course Bourbon tastings where permits allow.
      • Nature’s Bakery Cafe: Stay warm and fuel up with delicious snacks from our friends.
      • Vega: Get your fill of protein to help boost performance and recovery.
  • Portapotties (Ragnar MVPs, honestly).
  • Rest areas for a quick power nap or stretch session.
  • Recovery Zone with essentials to massage, rest, and recover before the next leg of your run.
  • Ragnar merch & gear—because you’ll want a souvenir of your epic adventure.

Note: All races are different and have different amenities–read your runner packet to learn more about what’s happening at your race!

The Finish Line Celebration

When your final runner crosses the finish, your whole team will join them for an unforgettable Ragnar-style celebration. Expect music, medals, and, if all goes well, a well-earned beverage.

WHAT TO PACK FOR RAGNAR ROAD

Packing smart is the key to surviving (and thriving) during the race. Here’s your ultimate checklist:

REQUIRED GEAR (Ragnar Rules. No Exceptions!)

  • Reflective Vest (must be worn during nighttime hours).
  • Headlamp (two per van for night runs).
  • Tail Light (two per van, clipped onto the back of the runner).

ESSENTIALS (The Basics You Can’t Forget)

  • Three running outfits (one for each leg)
  • Running shoes (Broken in…this is NOT the time for new kicks!)
  • Socks (Bring extra! Wet feet = blisters = pain)
  • Warm layers (nights can get chilly)
  • Comfortable clothes (for when you’re not running)
  • Toiletries (deodorant is a must; toothbrush if you want friends)
  • Wet wipes (your best shot at staying “fresh”)
  • Sleeping bag & pillow (for catching zzz’s between legs)
  • Water bottle (stay hydrated, stay happy)
  • Snacks (energy bars, fruit, trail mix—fuel up between runs)

💡 NICE-TO-HAVES (Not Required, But You’ll Thank Us Later)

  • Van decorations (Make it your team’s van)
  • Foam roller/massage stick (because your legs will need love)
  • Flip-flops (for giving your feet a break)
  • Portable phone charger (so you can document the chaos)
  • Eye mask & earplugs (for catching a quick nap)
  • First aid kit (blister care = essential)
